 Fluffer Nutter Recipe

Growing up, you don't even realize what is "normal" in your culture that is weird or different in others. For me, as a mixed child, there are things that I learned were strange or different with certain terms my dad, therefore I, used. One I can remember was the term "knock around clothes" aka bahaki (ba-haw-kee) in CHamoru, meaning clothes that typically are only used to play or hang out around the house. Most children just want to fit in with their peers and I was no different. I learned to code switch depending on who I was with. I quickly learned that there were some things from my dad's culture that made me different and I was teased for, so I actively changed the words I used while I was outside of my home.

One thing that I never felt like I had to hide from my dad's side was Fluffer Nutter. This sandwich is something I remember fondly as a delicious breakfast sandwich that my dad would make for me while I would (hurriedly) get ready for school and eat on the way. It was also something I was eager to share for breakfast with friends that would sleep over. Crunchy on the outside and gooey peanut butter and marshmallow deliciousness on the inside. The Fluffer Nutter is a metaphor for who I am; both brown and white. Bringing both sides together makes a complex flavor profile that would not be as perfect without the other. Here's an easy recipe for a life changing experience!

Ingredients:

2 slices of bread

marshmallow fluff

chunky peanut butter (I prefer this over creamy peanut butter so that it doesn't ooze out of the sandwich.)

1. Toast 2 pieces of bread.

2. Quickly spread peanut butter on one slice.

3. Then, spread marshmallow fluff on the other slice.

4. Put the toast together so that the peanut butter and marshmallow fluff touch.

5. Put sandwich in the microwave for 12-15 seconds and enjoy!

*Be sure to eat quickly as it doesn't taste as good once it starts cooling off and the toast hardens.
